Calgary Scientific launches ResMD™ Web

Browser-based platform positions Calgary company as leading provider of virtual medical technology

Calgary, AB - November 26, 2008 - Calgary Scientific Inc., a leading innovator in enterprise advanced visualization solutions, announces ResMD Web, an innovative, fully web-based advanced visualization platform. ResMD Web provides access to all original study images and powerful advanced visualization tools using only a browser on any computer or tablet, or personal device, without downloading any software or data onto the device. This means universal access with the freedom for radiologists and other image-intensive professionals to work from anywhere - whether at the hospital, at home on the hospital network or across the Internet.

ResMD Web is designed to address the demands for greater access to medical images while attending to the operational needs to reduce costs and improve efficiencies. With its “zero-footprint client” the only requirement is a browser to access images and powerful 2D, MIP/MPR, 3D tools and ResMD clinical modules. In addition, image data is not downloaded using ResMD Web, making access to a study faster while minimizing risks related to data synchronization errors or redundancies. For hospital IT, ResMD Web provides a highly scalable and distributable enterprise solution that improves the management of thin slices by reducing the need for redundant storage. The use of commodity graphics cards in a centralized infrastructure means lower hardware and support costs. This innovative platform will drive greater efficiencies and improve patient care while reducing costs to the overall enterprise.

The ResMD Web platform is an enabling platform the entire industry has been intent on creating for the virtual medical IT environment. Calgary Scientific has delivered the technology the rest of the industry has only talked about in their vision statements, and we can offer that platform to partners who wish to completely web-enable their software environment, harmonize their user interfaces, and integrate disparate systems under one centralized enterprise class, highly scalable offering.

"The ResMD Web advanced visualization platform has been in operation at Vancouver Island Health Authority for a few months now and we're already seeing improvements to the workflow for our radiologists and technologists,” said Dr. John Mathieson, Medical Director, Medical Imaging, Vancouver Island Health Authority. “Currently, our technologists have to conduct all reformats in the hospital, and there is added turnaround time for each request. Calgary Scientific's zero-footprint product and easy-to-use interface for slab MPR enables immediate interaction with the thin slice CTs. The studies can be quickly assessed from many angles, and thicknesses can be changed on demand from a PACS workstation or most PCs. This product will improve the quality of our technologists’ on-call time by allowing reformats and other advanced manipulations to be done from home. The ResMD Web capability will certainly help us attract and retain our most qualified staff."

"We are pleased with the usability of the ResMD Web system,” says Brent J Liu, PhD! Assistant professor and deputy director of !Imaging and Informatics Division at the !University of Southern California. “The zero-footprint approach allows our students and fellows to easily view and interact with CT and MR studies from their regular desktop computers using tools such as slab MPR and volume rendering that are usually only available on expensive workstations. We look forward to the advanced clinical functionality that CSI will be delivering through this system."

“ResMD Web is the foundation to our vision for the virtual healthcare environment that I believe will to change the way radiologists and other image-intensive professionals work,” says Byron Osing, CEO and Chair at Calgary Scientific. “We have seen many other fields of business embrace web-based technology to make drastic improvements to the way they work and I think we are about to see the medical community leapfrog ahead in that respect.”
